Early Life and Education
David McAlpaugh “Dave” Barry was born on July 3, 1947, in Armonk, New York, a suburban community in Westchester County. He was raised in a middle‑class family; his father, Jack Barry, worked as an accountant, while his mother, Helen, was a schoolteacher. As a child, Barry displayed an early interest in writing and storytelling, contributing jokes and short pieces to school newsletters and the family’s Sunday newspaper clipping collection.
Barry attended Armonk High School, where he edited the school newspaper and participated in the drama club, developing a penchant for observational humor. After graduating in 1965, he enrolled at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, a liberal‑arts institution noted for its Quaker heritage. He majored in English, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. While at Haverford, Barry wrote for the campus newspaper, The Haverfordian, and contributed satirical pieces to the literary magazine.
Following college, Barry spent a year in the United States Army Reserve, a service that he later referenced humorously in his columns. He then pursued a brief stint in graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania but left to focus on a career in journalism, a decision driven by his desire to write for a broader public audience rather than remain in academia.
